When treating chronic pain, pain specialists often follow a series of treatment levels. This means that treatment often begins with simple and less expensive therapies—such as bed rest, oral pain medications, and physical therapy. And it continues along a progression of therapies, such as opioids, nerve blocks, or SCS surgery, until sufficient pain relief is attained.
There are three leves in the chronic pain treatment continuum (shown in Figure 1).1 After a thorough diagnosis, you and your doctor can decide the best treatment for your pain. These are general guidelines and can vary depending on your condition, your response to previous treatments, and the recommendation of your pain specialist.
