Yvonne's Story*

Most weekends, Yvonne Livesay is on the back of a chopper, cruising the blacktops near her Florida home. She and her husband are in a motorcycle club for law enforcement officers, and they often hop on a bike to raise money for local charities. Yet not long ago, Yvonne was headed for a different kind of ride. “I was on my way to a wheelchair,” she says.

 Several years before, Yvonne was in a motorcycle accident, and the combination of the injuries she sustained plus a pre-existing condition left her in constant pain

Despite being treated with everything from morphine to injections to surgery, she could not escape the awful throbbing sensations in her back and legs.

“I never lived a day without pain,” she explains. “I spent three-quarters of my days in bed. I couldn’t ride a motorcycle—I couldn’t even walk around the block.” Yvonne stopped traveling and had to forego making cherished visits to her son and his family in Germany. “There are very few pictures of me holding my grandchildren,” she says. “It was horrible.”

Adding to Yvonne’s woes was her poor initial experience with neurostimulation. She was implanted with a stimulator that almost “never worked,” which made her think that she wasn’t suited for the therapy. Then she visited a doctor who suggested that she try a system made by ANS. Impressed by the doctor’s confidence in the system, she agreed and was happy to find that the new stimulator relieved most of her pain.

Since then, the change in Yvonne’s life has been dramatic. She has returned to many of the activities she enjoyed before, including riding a motorcycle. In fact, she and her husband recently attended a motorcycle festival with 100,000 other bikers. While there, she walked for up to two hours at a time, visiting the festival’s booths and demonstrations.

“It’s fantastic,” she says of her device. “It’s something nobody would believe unless they have one. A friend recently asked if I felt like going to dinner. I said that I felt like doing anything now. It has given me my life back.”
