Sue's Story*

When Sue first heard about neurostimulation, she didn’t think it would help the constant pain in her left leg and back. But like many chronic pain patients, she had exhausted her other medical options and was just grateful to have another treatment available.

“Nothing else had worked,” she says. “I didn’t think the stimulation would fix it, but I was excited that the doctors were going to try.” By that time, Sue could barely walk and was using crutches to get around. She struggled to keep working (ironically, in a medically related field) which required her to make grueling trips up and down the stairs of her office building. “It made for a long day,” she says.

Consequently, Sue was surprised and pleased to find that a temporary neurostimulator worked well for her. “It helped me walk for the first time in years,” she says. “I cried when they took it out.” Sue soon had a neurostimulator fully implanted, and in the year since then, she has put away her crutches for good.

Sue’s pain has eased so much that she can now walk in parks and shopping malls. And because she can sit comfortably, taking a trip is not an issue anymore, whether in a car to the store or an airplane to New York City, where she and her daughter recently strolled the city’s bustling streets to see a Broadway show.

“It’s cool to be able to plan things,” says Sue. “I felt like almost an invalid before, completely homebound. But now I’m not.” She says that her stimulator lets her spend quality time with her family and that she wishes more people knew about the therapy it provides. “It did such incredible things for me,” she says. “I can only imagine what it would do for others.”
