Shirley was a full-time minister overseas while accompanying her husband in the Foreign Service. She ministered to women and single adults in Greece, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand before moving back to the United States in 1995. It was then that Shirley began her work with juvenile justice ministries. Her life changed on the Fourth of July, 1999. Shirley was enjoying time with her grandchildren on a lake in Texas when the boat she was in hit a wave, sending the passengers several inches into the air. |

The children laughed with
delight when they landed back in their seats, but Shirley did not. The landing
fractured one of her vertebrae, and she was instantly in excruciating pain. Shirley could no longer sit at a restaurant or church, much less travel overseas. She adapted her ministry by becoming a webmaster for ministry recruitment, writing non-profit newsletters, and publishing quarterly web news. Still, Shirley’s back was in continuous pain, and the heavy pain medications were wearing on her ability to concentrate. After trying multiple forms of therapy and seeing at least eight different doctors, a friend referred Shirley to a pain specialist who recommended neurostimulation. Shirley experienced significant pain relief, and is very happy with her stimulator, which she affectionately calls “Mr. Eon.” In fact, to relieve pain in her shoulders and arms, Shirley had a second stimulator implanted, which she calls “Eon, Jr.”Now, Shirley is able to take painting classes, do yoga, and walk without a cane. She is most excited to be able to travel again and is planning a trip to Austin for her granddaughter’s graduation from the University of Texas.
