Sally is ready to take on the world—the Tae Kwon Do World Championship, that is. Not only is this amazingly athletic 64-year-old already a third-degree black belt, she will be competing for her fourth degree as well as her fourth World Championship title shortly. While this is an impressive accomplishment for anyone, Sally’s story is even more remarkable considering that eight years ago she couldn’t even walk. |
|
Sally was diagnosed with a spinal condition that gave her
severe pain in her back and lower leg. Her pain worsened, leaving Sally feeling
nauseous and unable to walk without assistance. This strong woman, accustomed
to an active lifestyle, couldn’t go up or down steps, much less continue her
favorite activity—martial arts. Sally was willing to try anything that would relieve her pain and let her get back to training, so her doctor gave her injections in her lower back. Unfortunately, Sally had a bad reaction to this treatment, and she still couldn’t walk, drive, or work. In her attempts to manage her chronic pain, Sally consulted with her doctor, who suggested a neurostimulator. Not only did this device alleviate her pain, but Sally was also able to return to martial arts with renewed enthusiasm. She now competes in the Forms and Weapons divisions of Tae Kwon Do, and she instructs children and adults in Karate, Aikedo, Judo, and Tae Kwon Do at a martial arts center near her home. While Sally’s story is unique, she is not alone in her battle with chronic pain. In regards to her fellow sufferers considering spinal cord stimulation, Sally says, “They shouldn’t be afraid to do it. For me, it’s made a big difference.”
