Life normally moves slowly in the small town of Cumming, Georgia, north of Atlanta. For Paula, however, life is full of activities, since she is a full-time mom with four teenage boys.
Keeping up with her sons was becoming more and more difficult for Paula. She was suffering from a disk in her spine that was degenerating. She had undergone spinal fusion surgery, but she still had pain in her back and legs. She had tried epidural injections and was using pain medications, but she still wasn’t satisfied.
Paula wanted to get off of the pain medications so that she could be fully involved with her sons and their activities. Nevertheless, she was miserable and wanted to be active again without the side effects of medication. She wanted to work in her yard but didn’t because she knew that it would cause her to have severe leg pain later. Doing anything with the boys was difficult—bowling, hiking, attending football games—all had to be shortened because they would bring on the pain.
Paula had tried a neurostimulation system before; but it didn’t cover her pain adequately, and the equipment had failed. Nevertheless, she decided to give neurostimulation another try.
Paula is glad she made that decision. I know when I hurt I can turn on a program or change it to cover different areas or alter the sensation.”
She is happy to be back doing the things she enjoys. Now she can swim, walk on a treadmill, create scrapbooks, and just sit outdoors. The system gives her 80 to 90 percent relief from the pain. “My boys notice the difference,” she says. “Pain is no longer the conversation all the time.”
“I definitely love it. For me, it was the answer. To the boys, I’m back to being a ‘normal mom’ again.” Paula has told others about her experience, and some of them now have their own neurostimulators. When people ask about hers, she tells them, “It works for me and gave me my life back. I think it’s wonderful.”
