Kathy's Story*

Patient Story - Kathy“It was totally amazing,” says Kathy about the first time she tried neurostimulation. “My chronic pain was minimal—it was absolutely awesome.” Kathy’s newly found relief came after years of suffering unbearable pain in her lower limbs, sensations that were so extreme that she often used a wheelchair.

“Sometimes it felt like my legs were on fire,” she says. “Other times they would feel tingly and numb.” Somehow Kathy was able to keep her job as an account manager, usually by sitting quietly at her desk all day to lessen the pain. In time though, she was taking so much medication that she could hardly function, or she had to skip work altogether because the pain was too great.

Yet more than her job was affected by pain. She found that it nearly ended her social life too. “Friends and family try to understand, but when you’re constantly cancelling plans…it makes it difficult,” she says. Hobbies and housework were neglected as well. “If it didn’t involve sitting or lying down, I probably couldn’t do it,” she recalls.

While Kathy was intimidated at first by the idea of neurostimulation, she says her research on the internet convinced her to give it a try. Since being implanted with a neurostimulator, most of her pain has been under control, which has let her take far less medication and do things that would have been wishful thinking a short time ago.

“We ran away from home,” she laughs, referring to a recent vacation with her husband. “We actually took a trip to Florida—we weren’t able to do that over the past few years.” Because of such experiences, Kathy encourages others to see what stimulation is like.
