Surf’s Up and He’s Ready*

As a sport fishing boat captain and a home improvement contractor, Devin was doing fine working in an affluent area of California known as the “Riviera of the Pacific.” Devin was enjoying an outdoor life, which also included bodyboarding and snow skiing, but it was becoming increasingly difficult for him.

Bodyboarding was becoming more uncomfortable, and he was having trouble buckling up his ski boots. It began slowly—the pain—creeping along until it covered his back, his side, and his groin. Eventually, even sitting down was very painful. As it got worse and began intruding more and more into his life, he went for help.

Devin ended up going to eight different doctors, including surgeons and a psychologist and neurologist. He went through various diagnostic procedures, like MRIs and CT scans, and tried a number of therapies, including acupuncture, physical therapy, chiropractic, and injections. Throughout this process, he felt that his condition was not taken seriously because he was young and healthy-looking.

As far as life was concerned, he was just in too much pain when he came home from work to do anything else. The pain was exhausting, and he couldn’t manage to be upbeat. The pain affected everything. He could take the prescription pain medicine; but, when he did, the “meds” limited what he could do. As he says, “I would come home and be so exhausted. I just wanted to lay flat and not go out.” Eventually, he realized that the pain was keeping him from playing with his young son, and that was a terrible blow.

Fortunately, Devin came in contact with a pain physician who was familiar with neurostimulation. When Devin heard about neurostimulation, he thought that having a neurostimulation system inside of his body might bother him. After going through the trial stimulation period, however, he was sold. “It was wonderful,” exclaims Devin.

As a result of the trial, Devin realized that he could have control over his pain. Because of this success, he went forward to get a permanent Eon® system. He describes the sensation of neurostimulation as “tingling with a little pressure.”

Devin states that he has 60 to 70 percent pain relief with neurostimulation. Plus, he says that he has gained physical flexibility and is less exhausted. He enjoys having control over his pain. He can increase or decrease the stimulation as needed over the course of a day. He considers it to be a miracle. In Devin’s words, “It’s like being reborn. It’s just awesome.”

Now, Devin can enjoy being active again. And, best of all, he can play with his young son.
