Deborah had only been married a year when she woke up one morning in
September 2004, with a swollen leg. This pain, unfortunately, grew to
severe pain in her legs and hips, along with milder pain in both arms.
As an occupational therapist, Deborah worked with schoolchildren to
help them improve functionally. As her pain increased, she found that
she was losing her own ability to function. She ended up spending most
of her time at home. As she explains, “It was very hard on my husband.
I went from being this outgoing person to someone who slept all day.”
Deborah was so sensitive to the pain that she wasn’t able to do much of
anything. Even wearing certain clothing was painful. She didn’t want to
be hugged, and she was tired of explaining her condition to people. It
became easier just to close herself off from others. In her words, “My
life pretty much stopped.”
She began trying various treatments, such as sympathetic nerve
blocks, medications, and epidural injections. None of them worked for
her. Then her physician recommended neurostimulation. Deborah was
interested and talked with someone who had an SCS system to get a
patient’s perspective. The result: Deborah decided to try it out.
In November 2004, Deborah received a permanent Eon®
Neurostimulation System. “I love my SCS,” she says, which gives her 90
percent pain relief. “I wouldn’t get rid of it or change it. I’m able
to turn my stimulation therapy up when weather changes or company comes
instead of taking meds so often. If I didn’t have it, I’d be taking
meds and then sleeping for three hours.”
She still remembers the neurostimulation trial period and what it felt
like. She had this to say about coming home with SCS: “I remember the
first time my cat could sit on me without my wanting to scream. My
husband took a photo of this with me crying with joy.” Deborah was
thrilled.
She likes the fact that her system is rechargeable. As she says, “It’s
nice to know I can recharge the battery.” She also likes the multiple
programs and the control they afford her—she can select an appropriate
program for a certain activity or for specific pain.
Now Deborah has gone back to work part-time. She has moved and is
painting her house—a 19th century Victorian with three stories and the
stairs to go with it. She can ride bicycles with her husband, and she
can enjoy walking, riding in a car, and gardening. She is even happy
that she can once again do the daily chores that most people don’t like
to do. Deborah recommends SCS to others and says, “It’s changed my life
100 percent.”
