Allan has devoted his life to giving second chances to
others, but he finally got the opportunity to do something for himself when he
heard about spinal cord stimulation (SCS).
This 61-year-old Tucson,
AZ resident has raised 12 foster
children in addition to his one adopted and two biological daughters. His own
family background is equally diverse, so he preaches open-mindedness and
compassion. He loves serving others, and he got a Ph.D. in Psychology to help
people with mental disorders. However, chronic back pain forced him to withdraw
from the activities he loved.
Simple actions like driving and sitting were excruciating
for Allan. His chronic pain forced him to stay at home, which made him feel cut
off from the rest of the world and depressed. Over the years, Allan “tried
everything” to control his pain, including 44 surgeries, injections, physical
therapy, and pain medications. At one point, he was taking as many as 20 pain
pills a day, and he still got very little relief.
Feeling like he was “at the end of his rope,” Allan heard
about SCS. He decided to try it, and he estimates that it controls 99% of his
pain. He has reduced his medications, and Allan is thrilled to report that his
“happy-go-lucky attitude” has returned.
He finds the system to be “easy to use,” and he calls the
day he received his stimulator his “new birthday” because he felt like he was
reborn into a new body. After years of giving others second chances, Allan is
thankful for his second chance at a life without chronic pain.
