First Patient Implanted with World’s Smallest Neurostimulator *

Former U.S. Army Parachutist Injured in Skydiving Accident Becomes First Patient Implanted with World’s Smallest Neurostimulator to Treat Chronic Pain: Adam’s Story*

“God, please don’t let me die, God, please don’t let me die.”

That’s what Adam Hammond kept repeating to himself when his parachute did not deploy correctly and he came crashing down to earth.

The veteran of more than 1,000 parachute jumps, Hammond is a U.S. Army officer and former Golden Knights parachutist who was skydiving while on leave in 2006. When his parachute did not “square” correctly, Hammond hit the ground in excess of 45 miles per hour. He sustained life-threatening injuries and spent the next six weeks in a coma. His doctors did not expect him to survive.

Fortunately, the young army officer did survive, and he spent the next two years undergoing surgeries and physical therapy.

"The pain was so bad that it took me a year to learn how to walk again,” states Hammond. He could only walk about a half mile at a time, and then he’d have to return to his wheelchair or lie down. "I was constantly in pain."

Looking for an alternative to deal with the pain, he reached out to an interventional pain physician.

"I was willing to try anything to stop the pain," adds Hammond.

The physician believed Hammond was a good candidate for neurostimulation therapy to help control his chronic pain. The goal was to help Hammond continue his physical rehabilitation and decrease his medications. So the 26-year-old became the first person in the world to be implanted with an Eon Mini™ neurostimulator, the world’s smallest, rechargeable neurostimulator to treat chronic pain of the trunk or limbs.

In the few shorts weeks since the surgery, Hammond is already beginning to regain control of his life. He’s able to walk twice as far, and he started working out again.

“The Eon Mini has been amazing,” notes Hammond. “I’m lifting weights again; I’m going out to dinner with friends. The results have been incredible. It has given me my life back.”
