Like the trial, the permanent implantation requires a surgical procedure. Depending on the leads your physician chooses, this procedure can be relatively short and minimally invasive. It is often performed on an outpatient basis or at a day surgery center and will involve either a local or general anesthetic. Your physician will discuss with you the type of anesthesia he or she feels is appropriate, based on the type of system being implanted.
During the procedure the temporary lead used during the trial will be removed and replaced with one or more permanent leads. Then, the generator will be implanted, typically in the upper buttocks are or abdomen. The leads are then attached to the generator, the incisions are closed, and dressings are applied.
Most patients are sent home the same day, but your physician may decide you require a longer hospital stay. Before you go home, you will learn about any restrictions to your physical activities and how to care for your incisions.
Your system may be turned on the day of surgery. You will be scheduled for a follow up appointment with your physician several days or more after surgery. This gives your incision time to heal. During this appointment, stimulation can be adjusted to provide you with the greatest pain relief.
You will learn how to use and care for your neurostimulator and how to adjust the level of stimulation so you can remain as pain-free as possible as you go about your daily activities. You will also have plenty of opportunity to ask questions about daily living with your SCS system. So you may want to prepare a list of questions for your physician.
