Taking the Next Step

If you have successfully completed the trial period, you and your physician will decide whether or not you should have the system permanently implanted. If the neurostimulator is not providing sufficient pain relief, your physician may reprogram the system and extend the trial period, or you may decide to have the lead removed. If you get pain relief of 50 percent or more and want to proceed, the next step is choosing which system will best fit your therapy needs. You and your doctor may discuss the various options ANS has to offer. Once a decision has been made you will be scheduled to have the permanent system implanted.

Choosing a System

If you've had a successful trial with spinal cord stimulation (SCS), and you and your doctor have decided that SCS is the best course of action for treating your chronic pain, you'll want to discuss which type of SCS system would be best for you.

ANS offers three different types of SCS system. They are all similar in that a generator and a lead are placed in your body. Where they differ is in the power source and what is required of you.

The three types of generators are rechargeable IPG, conventional IPG, and radiofrequency (RF).

Rechargeable System   Conventional System   Radiofrequency (RF) System
Rechargeable   Conventional   Radiofrequency (RF)

RechargeableThe Eon® and GenesisRCTM rechargeable systems' power source is inside the generator. And it can be recharged. With a rechargeable system, you would be responsible for recharging the power source when it runs low. A rechargeable system typically lasts longer than a conventional system. Eventually, a minor surgical procedure will be required to replace the power source when the time between recharges becomes impractical.

ConventionalThe Genesis® and GenesisXPTM conventional systems' power source is also inside the generator, but it is not rechargeable. It requires the least amount of effort on your part. A surgical procedure is required to replace the power source when it runs out.

Radiofrequency (RF) systemThe Renew® radiofrequency (RF) system has a generator with an external power source. Since the power source is outside the body, it is easy to replace when it runs out. However, with this type of system, you must wear the external power source when you want stimulation.
