Three types of systems are available for spinal cord stimulation (SCS): rechargeable, conventional, and radiofrequency. They are all similar in that a generator (which contains electronics) and a lead (or leads) are placed in your body. Where they differ is in the power source and what is required of you.

Rechargeable System—The newest type of system is a rechargeable system. The Eon® and GenesisRCTM rechargeable systems' power source is inside the generator. With a rechargeable system, you would be responsible for recharging the power source when it runs low. A rechargeable system typically lasts longer than a conventional system. Eventually a minor surgical procedure may be required to replace the power source if the time between recharges becomes impractical. |
|
Conventional System—The Genesis® and GenesisXPTMconventional systems’ power source is also inside the generator, but it is not rechargeable. A conventional system requires little effort on your part for maintenance. However, a minor surgical procedure is required to replace the power source when it runs out. |
|
Radiofrequency (RF) System—The Renew® system has a generator with an external power source. Since the power source is outside the body, it is easy to replace when it runs out. However, with this type of system, you must wear the external power source when you want stimulation. |

Your doctor will help you decide if SCS is right for you and, if so, which type of system would be best. SCS is not for everyone. Whether or not SCS will work for your pain depends on
