Types of Neurostimulators

Three types of neuromodulation systems are available for spinal cord stimulation (SCS): rechargeable, non-rechargable, and radiofrequency.

Rechargeable System

Rechargeable SystemThe newest type of neuromodulation system is a rechargeable system. Rechargeable systems like the Eon® and Eon Mini™ neurostimulation systems contain a rechargeable battery and typically last longer than non-rechargeable systems. A rechargeable system’s power source is inside the generator.

One of the advantages of a rechargeable system is that you can recharge your system in the comfort of your own home.

The advanced technology of the Eon Mini neurostimulation system, our newest rechargeable system, allows the longest recharge interval* at low and high settings and the longest-lasting battery of any other generator in its class.1-7 The rechargeable systems in the Eon family are FDA-approved to last for at least 10 years at high settings.2-5 Eon Mini is also the smallest system on the market—less than half the size of the Eon system and slightly larger than a silver dollar.1-4

Conventional System

Conventional SystemThe Genesis® and EonC™ systems’ power source is also inside the generator, but it is not rechargeable. A non-rechargeable requires little effort on your part to maintain. However, a minor surgical procedure is required to replace the power source when it runs out.

Radiofrequency (RF) System

Radiofrequency (RF) SystemThe Renew® system has a receiver with an external power source. Since the power source is outside the body, it is easy to replace when it runs out. However, with this type of system, you must wear the external power source when you want stimulation.

Your doctor will help you decide if neurostimulation is right for you and, if so, which type of system would be best. Neurostimulation is not for everyone, and results can vary depending on:

  • Your diagnosis and medical history
  • The severity, location, and type of your pain
  • Your willingness to be actively involved in your therapy
